What’s the Button on Headphones For, and How to Set It Up on Android?

The buttons on your headphones can do more than you think! You can control volume, manage media playback, handle phone calls, and even summon your device’s voice assistant with just a few clicks. Here’s how it works:
Using Headphone Controls
Media Playback Control
- Play/Pause: Press the button on the right earbud once.
- Skip Forward: Double-press the button on the right earbud.
- Skip Backward: Triple-press the button on the right earbud.
Volume Control
To adjust the volume:
- Tap the right button to turn the volume up.
- Tap the left button to turn the volume down.
You can also use your mobile device’s volume controls if needed.
Handling Phone Calls
The mic (marked in red) and call control button are on the right earbud.
Pro Tip: Make sure the mic isn’t blocked for the best audio quality during calls.
- Answer/End a Call: Press the button on the right earbud once.
- Reject an Incoming Call: Double-press the button on the right earbud.
- Answer a Second Call and Put the Current Call on Hold: While on a call, press the button on the right earbud once.
- Reject a Second Call and Stay on the Current Call: Double-press the button on the right earbud while on a call.
Call Notifications
A voice prompt announces who’s calling and the status of the call. If you want to stop call notifications, turn off voice prompts in your device’s Settings menu.
Accessing the Voice Assistant
The headphone mic doubles as an extension of your mobile device’s microphone, letting you interact with Siri, Google Assistant, or other voice control features.
- Activate Voice Control: Press and hold the button on the left earbud. You’ll hear a tone indicating that voice control is active.
